The series works as a general heist story but is elevated by the backgrounds of the characters and how their pasts intertwine. An engrossing narrative with multiple twists and turns, each letting the audience form a different opinion based on the order it is being watched in. The series’ nonlinear structure allows Kaleidoscope to be free from genre. By the time audiences get to the day-after-the-heist episode, Red, they’ll be so intrigued by seeing the robbery’s aftermath that it will make watching the finale all the more exciting. Kaleidoscope (2022) is a visionary piece of filmmaking that could pioneer other projects of a similar nature. But ultimately, this structuring works wonders for Kaleidoscope. With a theme reminiscent of movies like Ocean’s 11. Kaleidoscope is Netflix’s latest heist show, and unlike any other. The Netflix original Kaleidoscope takes a unique approach to audience engagement where viewers can watch the episodes in any order. The intensity isn’t maintained for the duration of these episodes. The soundtrack is also perfectly curated for the heist genre with many jazz-inspired or adjacent tunes setting the right tone for the series. There is uniformity throughout while also allowing certain moments of individual flair. The ensemble cast receives masterful direction from the various directors working on the series. The design of the vault and the various other sets are magnificent and finely detailed. The visuals are exemplary as each episode is littered with tinges of the same colour as the title of the episode. Allowing for different perspectives to be observed is brilliant storytelling. The story is expertly constructed to ensure the claims that the series can be viewed in any particular order. Sewell does a great job in his role, especially in the episode exploring their past. Whether it’s the current 4DX offerings in theatres (which harkens back to the Tingler era of Castle silliness) or Netflix dalliances with Choose Your Own Adventure-esque stories like Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch, or Kimmy Schmidt, there’s an undeniable charm in centering the device. Rufus Sewell plays the primary antagonist, Roger Salas although he isn’t a typically evil person. She serves as a constant roadblock to the crew in her quest for justice and her end is particularly tragic. Niousha Noor’s performance as Nazan Abbasi is quite good in the series. Peter Mark Kendall, Rosaline Elbay, and Jai Courtney play the trio of Stan, Judy and Bob respectively their interactions are always tense and heated. She’s the most collected member of the group after Leo but she also has her moments of vulnerability. Paz Vega plays Ava Mercer, Leo’s closest ally and she performs the role with charm. He brings in certain gravitas to the role that is a joy to behold. José Padilha ( Narcos), Everardo Gout ( Mars), Mairzee Almas ( The Sandman), and Robert Townsend ( Black Lightning) direct various episodes of the series.Giancarlo Esposito has a well-established reputation at this point and his turn as Leo Pap adds to his growing list of stately performances. Zucker, Jordan Sheehan, Fred Berger, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Justin Levy, and Russell Fine. The crime action drama is produced by Scott Free Productions and Automatik Entertainment, with Garcia and Ridley Scott serving as executive producers, along with David W. Garcia also serves as one of the writers on the show, along with Garrett Lerner ( Smallville), Kate Barnow ( True Blood), Kalen Egan, Ning Zhou, and the screenwriting duo, Evan Endicott & Josh Stoddard ( Betas), writing for various episodes. His filmography also includes the 2019 thriller film, Strange But True, featuring Amy Ryan in the lead role. He also wrote the Anonymous Rex book series one of which was turned into a SciFi channel series, which Garcia both produced and wrote. He is best known for his books, Matchstick Men and Repo Men (also known as The Repossession Mambo), both of which were made into popular films of the same names.
